LIMITING BELIEFS ARE OFTEN THINGS WE CARRY WITH US FROM CHILDHOOD THAT MORE OFTEN THAN NOT ARE UNCONSCIOUS AND UNKNOWN TO US. THESE ARE STORIES WE TELL OURSELVES ABOUT WHO WE ARE, WHAT WE CAN AND CANT ACCOMPLISH ETC. THEY OFTEN START WITH THE TWO WORDS, “I AM.” I AM TO STUPID, I AM TOO FAT, I AM DESTINED TO BE ALONE, I AM NOT DESERVING OF LOVE, ETC. THE SAD THING ABOUT THESE BELIEFS IS THAT MOST PEOPLE GO THROUGH THEIR WHOLE LIVES BELIEVING THESE FALSE BELIEFS THAT HAVE NO TRUTH BEHIND THEM!! THE PROBLEM IS THAT EVEN THOUGH THEY AREN’T TRUE, IF YOU BELIEVE THEM TO BE TRUE, THEY WILL MANIFEST TO BE TRUE AND FURTHER CEMENT THE LIMITING BELIEF.
SO HOW DO WE RECOGNIZE OUR LIMITING BELIEFS AND CHANGE THE PATTERN? ONE WAY IS TO DO SOMETHING SCARY OR THAT YOU NORMALLY WOULDN’T THINK YOU CAN DO. THEN LISTEN TO THE VOICE IN YOUR HEAD THAT’S TELLING YOU YOU CAN’T DO IT. QUESTION THAT VOICE AND SAY “WHY NOT,” AND “WHAT PROOF DO YOU HAVE THAT I CAN’T DO IT.” ONE LIMITING BELIEF FOR ME WAS THAT I COULD NOT RUN A MARATHON. THERE WAS NO REASON I COULDN’T OTHER THAN MY OWN BELIEFS SURROUNDING THE ISSUE, OR MOREOVER, THAT I WAS AFRAID OF FAILING SO I SHYED AWAY FROM EVER TRYING. FEAR OF FAILURE HOLDS US BACK FROM A LOT OF THINGS AND FROM LIVING LIFE FULLY. WHO ARE WE SO AFRAID OF DISAPPOINTING? I HAVE COME TO REALIZE FAILURE AS JUST ANOTHER STEP TOWARDS SUCCESS AND THAT I WOULD RATHER TRY AND FAIL THAN NEVER TRY AT ALL BECAUSE THAT WILL NEVER BE SUCCESS.
ONCE WE CAN RECOGNIZE OUR LIMITING BELIEFS IT IS EASIER TO CHANGE THEM. IT TAKES DEEP REFLECTION AND COURAGE TO DO THIS AND TO CHALLENGE YOURSELF. BUT IF WE CAN LOOK WITHIN AND EXAMINE OUR BELIEFS AND SEE WHAT NO LONGER SERVES US, WE CAN CHALLENGE OURSELVES, CHANGE OUR PERSPECTIVES, AND BECOME THE BEST VERSIONS OF OURSELVES. THIS RELEASES UNWANTED BAGGAGE AND GIVES US A SENSE OF PERSONAL POWER AND SHOWS US WE ARE THE AUTHOR OF OUR STORIES AND WE WRITE IT HOWEVER WE WANT WHILE ALSO GIVING US A SENSE OF FREEDOM.
